The 44th annual Capital City Pride Fest concluded during the weekend of June 9th-11th. The historic East Village was transformed into a runway for drag queens, a display for pride flags, and a home for members of the LGBTQIA+ community members and allies.

Gov. Kim Reynolds has signed a sweeping education law that orders the removal from schools of books that contain sexual content/ sexual acts and prohibits teaching about LGBTQ topics.

The law will ban books in schools that contain descriptions or depictions of sex acts, disallow educational teaching on gender identity or sexual orientation prior to the seventh grade, require schools to notify parents of student request to use new pronoun, and maintain the "constitutionally protected right" for parents to make decisions for their children.

In Iowa, 3.6% of people identify as LGBTQ, according to UCLA Williams Institute and local resources offered by the Des Moines Pride Center, Iowa Safe Schools, One Iowa, and others who are essential to creating an inclusive city.

Iowa Senate passed House File 348, which is their version of "Don't Say LGBTQ+" legislation. The bill is discriminatory against the LGBTQ+ community that bans instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in grades K-6, prohibits schools from providing gender-affirming accommodations for transgender students without parental consent, and would require school staff to out transgender students.
